With that in mind, it is very beneficial to heed some basic safety tips to keep your hiking adventure a pleasant experience.
First, do not travel alone. Of course, there are exceptions to every rule. If you are strolling along a well-traveled area, you are probably safe. But, hiking through a thick forested area with canyons and winding trails is a different story. You could easily get lost.
Perhaps you view hiking as easy or a “piece of cake” as some would say. Put on some boots, shorts and a shirt and off you go. How hard can it be? Well, walking is not necessarily the same thing as hiking. Ask any experienced hiker.
Now, some hikes may very well be that easy and those hikes should be. Not all hikes need to be a three or four day venture in the mountains, or navigating through forests or across streams and rivers. It is perfectly fine to just want some fresh air and exercise in nature’s surroundings.
But, if you want to expand your hiking there are some things you should consider in preparation.
For many who live in areas that see a lot of snow in the wintertime, it is a time of year that they try to stay inside as much as possible and avoid the elements. However, what if the elements were not so cold? Just because it is winter in one region does not mean it is winter everywhere else! While your home may be frozen, there are plenty of places that are warm enough for a relaxing outdoor vacation.
One of the best vacations to take to escape the cold north is a cruising tour further south. Imagine – instead of shivering in your home, you could be seeing the wonders of Egypt in beautiful weather.
An outdoor vacation such as hiking can be a terrific getaway. Vacations like hiking are far different than other vacations which often require you to make travel reservations and find hotel accommodations. However, some hikers like to make a hike part of a larger vacation and rent a house by a lake. This is a great idea. But, hiking does require some extra precaution unlike other popular getaways to the beach or popular tourist attraction.
Getting lost is possibly the most potential problem for those new to hiking. A few steps off the trail can result in a few additional yards in the wrong direction and, eventually, you are far away from your trail and lost. Or, sometimes hikers misread maps and find they are on a different trail than planned. The point is that however it happened, you are lost. Here is some advice to help you avoid getting lost and what you should do if you do get lost, though hopefully you avoid it in the first place.
