Hey, I understand. In these economic times, most people don't cruise-shop for the most extravagant cruise, the one that hits the most ports, or the one with the biggest liners. They go for the one that offers good quality at the lowest prices. And no one can blame the public for this. So who offers the best overall prices?

As recently as the early 1990s, Premier Cruise Line offered some of the most reasonable cruise prices available. They'd specialized in purchasing older ocean liners and converting them into cruise ships, primarily around the tropics. Premier began transporting scads of people to Disney World and was raking in money like autumn leaves. Disney even allowed them to bring Mickey and Goofy on board as guests to charm the families. But then, alas, Disney initiated its own cruise line and yanked the cartoon characters. Then, to make things worse for Premier, Carnival, Norwegian Cruise Lines, and Royal Caribbean began a massive building program of new liners. They grew so large that they could undercut almost any discount cruises Premier put out there. The company finally folded in September of 2000.

Marinas can be found in harbours, ports or on river waterfronts. These marinas can accommodate a variety of boats, including motorboats, sailboats, fishing boats, cruise ships and yachts, as well as the house boat. When choosing a cruise, and cruise line, there are many factors to keep in mind, especially if this is your first time. Before making any selections, be sure you know how much time you have available, the general area, or region, you want to cruise, what your budget is and, if needed, have your passport ready to go. If you have not tried to get a passport since 9/11, this may be the most time-consuming part of all, and I suggest starting that now.

Then you should know there are several different cruising “styles” you will have to pick from. Here is just a short list of some of the choices you will have:
* Senior cruise
* Family cruise
* GLBT cruise (gay, lesbian, bi-sexual, transsexual)
* Singles cruise
* Romantic cruise (designed for couples)
* Holiday cruise
* Ocean crossing
* Adventure cruise
* Disabled accommodations
* Luxury cruise

There are more than 200 cruise ships that you can choose from today. But the one thing that they all have in common is that a little advance planning and “insider” knowledge can help you save time and money on your next cruise. Here are the “top ten tips”:

1. Maximum flexibility = Maximum savings. Most travelers have some flexibility in their travel dates, especially if planning ahead of time. Let your cruise specialist know that you can consider alternate departure dates that may have lower rates available. Keep in mind cruise lines will offer better prices and perks on sailings that are not nearing capacity.

Tip: Shoulder or off peak sailings offer the deepest price cuts. For example, the departure right after the New Year cruise might be substantially lower.

As a 30 year cruise industry veteran, website, I can honestly say that I am perplexed as to why more people seem to be jumping overboard. It is certainly tragic when this occurs and the news media seems to report these phenomena more frequently and with more in-depth coverage than other similar events. This probably because cruising is in and of itself more interesting and sexy than most other forms of leisure travel. And approximately 85% of all North Americas have not taken a cruise so there is an element of mystery to the process.

If you are planning your first cruise ship experience, there are a lot of things to consider. This trip, and the accommodations available will not be like the travels you have experienced in the past.

The biggest thing you need to keep in mind is the location where you will be enjoying your holiday, will also be the same place you will be sleeping. It’s much like having your hotel follow you from one destination to the next, always just a little walk away. Even though there are no rooms that are too far away from one another, small changes in location can make a major difference in your ability to enjoy your trip. For example, if you have an outer cabin that is near a high-traffic deck, you may be forced to hear people stumbling by your door, or talking loudly outside your room all night. Likewise, if you have a cabin that is just below a stairwell, you will hear the clomping of people walking up and down the stairs. This is a decision you should not take lightly.

When you think of taking a trip to another country, there is no doubt you immediately consider airline ticket prices. But, that was not always the most popular mode of travel. Before there were 747 jetliners to ferry people across oceans, the way to travel was by cruise ship. But when it came to the masses, they were not necessarily the luxury vessels we are used to seeing today.
